Formula Rationale:
Huang Bai (Cortex Phellodendri) and Da Huang (Radix Et Rhizoma Rhei) both clear heat and eliminate dampness. Cang Zhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis) and Du Huo (Radix Angelicae Pubescentis) dispel wind, eliminate dampness, and disinhibit the joints. Both Ren Dong Teng (Caulis Lonicerae) and Luo Shi Teng (Caulis Trachelospermi) dispel wind, clear heat, and eliminate dampness. Dang Gui ( Radix Angelicae Sinensis) and Niu Xi (Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae) quicken the blood and dispel stasis. Since the blood and fluids move together, dampness causes blood stasis. In addition, quickening the blood helps to dispel dampness. Bai Zhi (Radix Angelicae Dahuricae) dispels wind and dries dampness. However, it is also a very strong and effective pain-stopper. Although its nature is warm, it is often used for hot conditions associated with dampness and pain. Zhang Nao (Camphora) and Bing Pian (Borneolum) aromatically penetrate and free the flow of blockage and obstruction, especially when associated with dampness and turbidity. They disperse swelling, clear heat by resolving depression, and stop pain.
